jplay PNP: No drinking at police camps

MANILA, Philippines — As the “ber” months are known for parties, the Philippine National Police has prohibited drinking liquor at PNP camps and other workplaces.

Included in the ban are the so-called “happy hour” and “beer busting” activities, wherein liquor consumption was allowed to some extent as part of police traditions, the PNP said in a memorandum dated Oct. 21.

While these activities are intended to give police officers and non-uniformed personnel time to unwind, foster camaraderie and strengthen working relationships, the PNP said these also lead to situations that endanger people’s lives.

The activities also violate the dignity and privacy of other people, the PNP said.

“To avoid similar situations, all PNP offices and units are directed to strictly enforce the prohibition on drinking any kind of intoxicating liquor within the workplace,” the memorandum read.

A police official assigned in Metro Manila confirmed receiving a copy of the memorandum from the PNP headquarters.

The PNP said it would not hesitate to impose sanctions on violators as well as their immediate superiors.

“Any violation of this directive and any untoward incidents that may happen as a result of such violation shall be dealt with accordingly,” the memorandum read.

In 2021, a police colonel was relieved from his post after he assaulted a subordinate inside a police station in Legazpi City.

The official was drunk after attending a party at the police camp.jplay
